This study intends to establish the concept and scope of ‘design for better built environment’ in order to create a decent and sustainable architectural and urban environment. In addition, the study pursues to raise the awareness of design for better built environment among experts and civil servants in related fields. To achieve this, the study reviews the understanding of and need for the design for better built environment, and provides directions to implementing the design for better environment based on domestic and foreign case studies. The results of the study can be used as reference materials for establishing policies and implementing projects involving built environment by the central and local governments.
‘Design for better built environment’ is a coined term by combining ‘built environment’ and ‘design,’ and defined as creating a ‘good built environment’. A ‘good built environment’ refers to a whole spatial environment satisfying the following requirements; Access & Linkage, Safe & Comfort, Identity & Image, Use & Activities and Ownership & Management.
