Summary

Infrastructure is necessary for human beings; it brings convenience to daily life, constituting basic elements for urban infrastructure. Over the past half century, road and railroad networks have expanded nationwide with logistics industries advancing following the construction of harbors, railroad stations and airports, and cities extended accordingly. As a result, transportation convenience has been secured. However, excessive construction and development have been caused in the process, which led to a range of problems including environmental destruction, collapse of life-sphere unit communities, and lack of diverse pedestrian-friendly public spaces.
This caused the need to improve the quality of infrastructure to arise. However, attempts to meet the need are limited to improvements in the physical design. It is analyzed that this is because the value of 'good infrastructure' has not been established yet. Besides, there is lack of consensus on this value among stakeholders concerned. With this backdrop, the study intends to establish the role and value of infrastructure, and provide principles for the design of 'good infrastructure.' In addition, the study aims to analyze the process the nation's infrastructure has been constructed, along with domestic and foreign policy trends, based on which to provide methods to enhance the design of infrastructure.
To achieve the research goals, the study reviews the concept of infrastructure and domestic and international theories, as well as related laws and regulations. Also, the study explores the current status of the nation's infrastructure, carrying out interviews among experts and public servants engaged in the construction of domestic infrastructure, along with field trips. In addition, the study reviews examplary infrastructure constructions overseas, carrying out field trips and expert interviews, based on which to draw out key success factors.
