Summary

Our public spaces have been failing to play their due role as a foundation for daily life. They have been left disconnected from the surroundings while distributed regionally unbalanced. In most cases, our public spaces are supplied unilaterally by the public sector and formulated for managerial convenience rather than for the users. As a result, the public space which is closely related to our daily life is absolutely insufficient. Furthermore, our public spaces are in pitiful condition in terms of quality. In order to tackle these fundamental problems with our public spaces and create a user-oriented space, it is urgently needed to establish a comprehensive and long-range vision which takes into account urban circumstances. Under this backdrop, the study primarily intends to analyze the current status and issues in existing systems for public space planning and operation, and explore measures to improve the operating systems. Accordingly, the study aims to review the need for a comprehensive public space planning and present measures to establish a collaborative operating system among administrative authorities, with a view to improving the quality of urban public spaces.
