Summary

The paradigm of urban planning has recently experienced a shift from drawing up a new plan on empty land to urban renewal, in which a new development project is added to the established city that has existed for a long time. Most of modern urban renewal projects such as redevelopment, reconstruction and refurbishment aim to solve problems of the established city and improve the local environment. Therefore, diagnosis is increasingly becoming important for rational identification of problems of the established city. There are many ongoing projects related to open space in Korea, including street conditions improvement, waterside refurbishment, park development and square development. However, those projects are not contributing to general improvement of urban space quality because they are one-time projects for a few key areas, not based on an objective diagnosis of problems of open space in the established city.
This study suggests an open space assessment model for collecting basic data and diagnosis data on open space, based on the assumption that open space improvement can be achieved only when there is a visual tool to efficiently display the physical conditions of actual open space.
This study consists of the following parts:
a) literature review for drawing basic principles and necessity of an open space assessment model, b) review on the current state of open space database and its applications at home and abroad,
c) suggestion of an open space assessment model for the established city and its review through simulation, and
d) proposal of strategies for management and application of the assessment model.

Key words: open space, assessment model, attractivity, accessibility, connectivity, KOPSS.
