Summary  Recently, people have begun to recognize the significance of public space and the role of public sector in urban space. Furthermore, efforts are being made to improve the quality. However, the concept or scope of public space still remains obscure and unclear. Accordingly, it is the starting point of the study to establish the concept of public space, and based on that, identify the current status, thus establishing the future directions for improvement.
 The purposes of the study can be roughly summarized as follows: first, to lay the groundwork for future studies on public space and establishment of relevant policies by clarifying the obscure concept of public space and by clearly defining the scope. Secondly, to analyze domestic laws and institutional systems on public space, and identify the current state of public space being created, operated and managed, thereby diagnosing the problems. And lastly, based on that, to present directions to future studies for improving the quality of public space.
