Summary

There has been almost no critical discussion on architecture and urban space enough to secure various discourses for the architectural and urban policies. But for the humanistic viewpoint, it is not possible to set the goal, methods, and procedure of spatial policies. What should we do? How can we do it? What is the available tools palette? All these questions have to be certificated by certain compromise across various communities through each philosophical deliberation. Without the process, a policy can be just a tool to fulfill the partial interest of some group, which means the whole society lacks fairness, stability and sustainability. Therefore the humanist research for spatial policy is a basic step to found a sound policy frame for architecture and urban space in a republic.

This research looks over the general state of humanist studies in Korea statistically, and study up on humanist approaches in domestic architecture and urban design fields. There are divided arguments on the crisis of humanists and the crisis of humanist study itself, but mainly focus on several topics such as the reinforcement of humanist research capability, the modification of academic system, and public research support system. In that point, a national research institution's joint research program can be regarded as a effective way of facilitation of humanist studies.

If limited in our literature survey's range, each philosophical concept is merely adopted for an analytical tool in the humanist approaches in architecture and urban design field in Korea. There is almost no humanist speculations in earnest, which means that a significant participation of authentic humanist researchers in architecture and urban design fields is needed.

In this research process, ten humanists are interviewed and with them a common seminar was held to prepare a regular event for public communication on humanist spatial studies. According to the seminar's debates, eight research topics are derived. The topics are as follow; the speculation on memory and space, story-production in space, criticism on humanist approaches in architectural discourses, humanist criticism on modern urban space, and application and review of philosophical concepts to space. Although these topics have clear limits in research range and depth, they has significant meaning as first step to a integrated field between humanist study and architecture or urban design.

Beyond this research, AURI is to prepare regular humanist forum in 2008, which can be a academic arena for humanist and architects and urban designers. After the forum, a publication of the outcomes is planned to broaden the integrated ideas on spatial considerations.
