Hosting of the 7th International Seminar on Pedestrian Safety
on “Walkable and Safe City”





The Architecture & Urban Research Institute (AURI), along with the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, the Korea Transport Institute, and the General Insurance Association of Korea, hosted the 7th International Seminar on Pedestrian Safety on November 7, Tuesday, under the theme of “Walkable and Safe City.”

The seminar began with a presentation by Ann Plas, Head of the Urban Planning Department in Gent, Belgium, titled “The Story of Gent – The Shortcut to Sustainable Mobility.” The second presentation was given by Professor Kuniyoshi Naoyuki at Yokohama City University, Japan, concerning “Safety Policies for the Pedestrian Environment in Yokohama, Japan,” which was followed by the third presentation by Changsun Jang, Lead in Transport and Sustainable Mobility at the Global Green Growth Institute who introduced the “GGGI Sustainable Mobility Approach for the Members.” The fourth presenter was Kishimoto Siori, Manager at the urban design firm Heart Beat Plan in Japan, who presented plans to revitalize Nanba Square in her presentation on “Cases of Improvement in the Pedestrian Environment in the Kansai Region.” Finally, Sunghoon Oh, a Senior Research Fellow at AURI, explained the issues in South Korean pedestrian policies in his presentation on “South Korea’s Pedestrian Policies: Achievements and Future Directions.”


Sunghoon Oh, Senior Research Fellow at AURI, chaired the subsequent discussion session attended by Seung-beom Heo, Head of the Safety Improvements Division at the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, Seung-gook Woo, Head of the Center for Transport Safety and Disaster Prevention at the Korea Transport Institute, Professor Chi Hyun Shin at Kyonggi University, Professor Iljoon Chang at Gachon University, Eun-hee Kim, Head of the Policy Research Center at the Urban Action Network, and Sung-min Hong, research fellow at the Hwaseong Institute. The participants discussed ways to improve pedestrian projects, pedestrian policies concerning residential roads and parking, and evaluation indicators for pedestrian projects.
