2023 1st AURI Architecture & Urban Forum
: Beyond 20th Century Urban Design

On May 16 (Tuesday), the Architecture & Urban Research Institute (AURI) held the 2023 1st AURI Architecture & Urban Forum at the Research Institute's conference room. This forum provided a platform for sharing knowledge in the field of architecture and urbanism, diagnosing policy issues, and identifying research topics and planning initiatives. The event was also live streamed via Zoom.

The presentation was given by Seyong Kim, the President of Gyeonggi Housing & Urban Development Corporation, on the theme of "Beyond 20th Century Urban Design." He explored strategies for responding to social changes such as demographic shifts, changing resident needs, and lifestyle transformations after COVID-19. The background and necessity of "compact cities," which enable the revitalization of urban spaces by utilizing underutilized land within cities, were also discussed. Next, Hyunsu Kang, former President of the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements, joined as the designated discussant and continued the discussion on the basic concepts and systems necessary for achieving spatial welfare beyond residential welfare. 

The final open discussion was chaired by Youngbum Reigh, the President of AURI. Participants, including Young-hyun Kim, Head of AURI's Architectural Policy Research Division, Eunyoung Seong, Head of AURI's Housing Culture Research Group, and Hae-jin Yeo, a researcher at AURI, engaged in a lively debate on the future directions of architecture and urbanism, focusing on topics such as multi-residential hubs, restructuring rural spaces, and cost-effective and safe urban design and buildings.
