2022 Korea Hanok Competition Awards Ceremony

The '2022 Korea Hanok Competition Awards Ceremony', hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (MOLIT) and organized by the Architecture and Urban Research Institute (AURI), was held on November 29 (Tuesday) in the main conference room of AURI. The Korea Hanok Competition, which is being held for the twelfth time since 2011, is designed to seek out examples of hanok excellence that exemplify Korea's traditional architecture, and to raise public interest in hanoks. 

Under the theme of 'Hanok with Heart', this competition was contested in four categories: completed hanok, student competition, photo competition, and video competition, and a total of 554 works were received as entries. After a jury composed of experts selected the winners through a document, presentation, and on-site examination process, a total of 54 works were selected for prizes, including 2 in the completed hanok category, 16 in the student competition category, 28 in the photography category, and 8 in the video category.

First, the completed hanok category examined the overall completeness of the building, such as the satisfaction of the hanok building users and the quality of design and construction, and selected 'Yemaekdang' for this year's hanok award and 'Namhansanseong 119 Safety Center' for the hanok public building award. In the student competition category, 'Resemble, Embody', which involved a plan for a cultural library based on understanding and interpretation of the hanok space, won the grand prize. In the photography category, the grand winner was "Roofline Aesthetics," which showcased free composition away from a uniform view of what constitutes a home. Meanwhile, in the video category, the grand prize was awarded to "Our Hanok," which highlighted sophisticated shooting and editing techniques with diverse cinematography techniques and locations.
