AURI Special Session of the 58th IFLA World Congress 2022

‘City Parks and Public Spaces After Climate Change and the Pandemic’


The Architecture and Urban Research Institute held the 2022 58th IFLA World Congress/AURI Special Session at the Multipurpose Hall of the Kimdaejung Convention Center in Gwangju on Wednesday, August 31st. Under the theme of 'City Parks and Public Spaces After Climate Change and the Pandemic', the special session discussed the roles, functions, and use of urban parks and public spaces in global crises such as climate change and COVID-19 with global landscape experts.


The event started with the opening remarks by Lee Young-beom, President of the Architecture and Urban Research Institute, followed by presentations and discussions by Korean and foreign experts.


For the first topic presentation, Professor Jeff Hou of the University of Washington, USA, presented on ‘A Post-Pandemic Urban (Park) Agenda’. Second, Professor Park So-hyun of the University of Connecticut, USA, gave a talk on ‘Disruptive Thinking for the Future of Urban Parks’. Lastly, Lee Eun-seok, Associate Research Fellow at the Architecture and Urban Research Institute, delivered a synopsis of the role of green architecture in the climate change crisis through ‘How to use green infrastructure to improve the resilience of cities in the climate crisis era’.

 

In the discussion that followed, Bruno Marques of Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand served as chair. The enthusiastic discussion featured James Hayter, Chairman of IFLA, Catherine Nagel, Director of City Parks Alliance, USA, Koh Jung-hui, CEO of Thirdspace Berlin, Germany, and Jung Wook-joo, Professor of Landscape Architecture at Seoul National University.
