The 8th International Seminar on Pedestrian Safety “Creating a Walkable and Safe Pedestrian City”



The Architecture & Urban Research Institute (AURI), along with the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, the Korea Transport Institute, and the General Insurance Association of Korea, hosted the “8th International Seminar on Pedestrian Safety” under the theme of “Creating a Walkable and Safe Pedestrian City” on Monday, November 11, at the Post Tower in Myeong-dong. 

Silvia Casorran Martos, the Secretary General of Red de Ciudades y Territorios por la Bicicleta (RedBici) in Spain, gave a presentation titled “Let’s protect schools” in Session 1, titled “Creating a Safe Society for Children.” The second presentation, titled “play street/school street,” was given virtually by Asa Thomas, a research fellow at the Centre for Transport and Society at the University of the West of England Bristol, followed by a video introduction of “school road” by Gabriele Herzog, Project Manager in Urban Transportation for the City of Graz. The following Session 2, titled “Sharing Implications of Pedestrian Environment Improvement Cases,” included presentations by Ohkouchi Keiko, Head Researcher at the Policy Research Institute for Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism at Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, on “The Case of Hokomichi (Roads for Promoting Pedestrian Convenience) in Japan,” followed by a video presentation by Pablo Carreras, sustainable mobility consultant at Codra Conseil in France, on “Active Design Strategies for Promoting Walking During the Paris Olympics,” and ended with Professor Rui Izumiyama’s presentation on an overseas case of improving pedestrian environment titled “A Case of Road Space Transition for Pedestrians in Japan.”

The discussion session was moderated by Seung-gook Woo, Head of the Center for Transport Safety and Disaster Prevention at the Korea Transport Institute, and Professor Sangjin Han, Sunghoon Oh, Senior Research Fellow at AURI, and the three presenters discussed ways to improve pedestrian safety and convenience.
